  • Candice Swanson PA-C is the provider that I saw yesterday, and it was honestly the most horrible experience I've ever had at an urgent care facility. I came to this location on my lunch break because I was in pain, presenting symptoms of Mastitis. This condition is more common in breastfeeding women, but can also develop in women who don't breastfeed. As you may know, Mastitis presents the same symptoms as Inflammatory Breast Cancer which is an Extremely aggressive form of Cancer with a 5 year survival rate of only 40%. Naturally, anyone experiencing symptoms of these 2 conditions would be concerned as I was, I explained to the triage Nurse (who was a male) all of my symptoms and how I believe I may have gotten mastitis. He took my vitals, was very attentive and professional and walked me to the exam room. Candice entered the room immediately with no chart, no knowledge of my personal medical history, only what the bits and pieces of what she heard me describe to the medical professional who took my vitals. She examined my breast for all of 7-10 seconds and proceeded to tell me that I definitely didn't have mastitis. Me, baffled by how she could tell instantly, I asked her "how can you tell?" And she replied and I quote "because you didn't jump when I examined you" explaining that my breasts would be painful and swollen. I calmly stated, that indeed my breasts are painful, swollen, plus more details that I won't publicly disclose on here. I proceeded to tell her I had a unexplained fever since last week and as she cut me off, she tells me my vitals signs are "FINE" and said "here's the deal, if I treat you today I'd be treating your FEAR, not a real illness" at this point she offers me a shot of some sort which I of course declined because why would you offer me a shot for "fear" which is an emotion last time I checked.... I'm visibly upset now, tears welling. Candice Swanson then told me "There is no test for mastitis (which I already knew) so no way for her to tell..." In that case why tell me 5 mins earlier that I "definitely" don't have it if you actually can't tell. I told her I was NOT interested in the shot as she brought it up again and I explained I'd feel more comfortable with oral antibiotics. She left the room, after 10 mins or so she came back after actually reviewing my chart this time. She opened the exam room door I was in and said, "ok well I guess it does look like you do have a fever and that could mean you really do have this infection going on so I'll send the prescription over to your pharmacy now"........ To my knowledge, and prior experience, any medical professional who is providing a patient with adequate medical attention should review their chart before an examination. Therefore, Candice Swanson previously stating "my vitals are fine" was a lie, because if she had reviewed them prior to telling me the only thing I had was "FEAR", the overall visit may have been a successful one. Maybe next time, if I'm feeling ill on a holiday weekend and my only option is to be seen at this urgent care, I could come in with an attorney and see how many doors are opened for a medical malpractice lawsuit. Had I simply listened to her and let her dismiss me after telling me "you definitely don't have mastitis", my condition may have worsened and she'd be held accountable for my pain and suffering. Makes me wonder how many other patients that are like me have left that place in tears like I did without the proper care and fair treatment they deserved.
