  • I wouldn't consider myself a "fitness fanatic" by any means, but the Barefoot Boot Camp at Body Heat has me hooked! This was my first time at Body Heat, and I was more than pleasantly surprised. Here's a little bit of what you can expect on your first visit. Walking in the door, I was greeted by a friendly receptionist. If it's your first time, do yourself a favor and arrive about 20 minutes early so that you can fill out the new student profile and enjoy the facilities - it's almost like a spa. I brought a yoga mat, a towel, and water - though you can purchase all of them at Body Heat if you don't have them. Body Heat additionally provided weights, bands, lemon infused water, and cold towels. Pro Tip: If this is your first time doing a class like this, go light on the weights. Don't be a hero - the class lasts an hour! As I walked in the room I immediately noticed the change in temperature. It was slightly warmer, but not uncomfortable. The instructor Danielle (who is amazing, by the way) recognized that I was a new student, welcomed me warmly, and gave me some quick tips before she began the class. She ran through some quick housekeeping items for the group: upcoming events, student birthdays (and a forewarning about "birthday burpees" ... yes, they're a real thing), and started the class with a suggestion to make the next hour about yourself. And with that, we were off and running (quite literally). The music in the class was great, and even though it was my first time it was fairly easy to keep up with the routine. Of course then I looked in the mirror and realized that my body wasn't doing exactly what my mind thought it was doing, but it was a "judgement free zone" and I can only imagine that I'll improve with time. I've attended other boot camps where the instructor provided "encouragement" by yelling - that technique doesn't work for me. Throughout the class Danielle provided me with the perfect balance of encouragement and support. She pushed me just when I needed it, in just the right way. In case you didn't pick up on it from the name, this is a "hot workout". And make no mistake about it - it was hot. But Danielle controlled the temperature of the room perfectly. She opened the door to bring in cool air just when it was needed. And if gets too hot for you (which it did for me about 35 minutes in), you can step out of the room to cool off for a few minutes ... then jump right back in. Danielle offered modified moves for each set, making the class perfect for every skill and fitness level. At the end of the class, I left feeling not only physically invigorated, but also emotionally centered and ready to take on the weekend. If you're looking for a fun, exciting way to burn some calories and feel great about yourself, you HAVE TO try Body Heat's Barefoot Boot Camp. And (spoiler alert), yes, you're barefoot.
