| - While visiting a friend on the east side of the city, we decided to grab pints at the original Auld Spot Pub location. I'd gone to the one on College several times, and loved it.
The selection of food and beer seemed to be the same, and the branding was consistent between locations, but the service and atmosphere was not. I found it took a really long time until someone came to take our order, and no one even acknowledged us when we walked in the door. They seemed to be playing hip-hop, rap & club beats, to a middle-aged white crowd. I hadn't heard that sort of music at the other Auld Spot, and I commented how odd it seemed that they weren't really paying attention to the demographic. Then out of nowhere, they put on a Guns and Roses tune, and everyone in the bar starts singing along, and rocking out, and buying drinks for the strangers next to them, and the scene felt a bit better. But as soon as the song concluded, it was back to Snoop Dogg's greatest hits. I don't get it. Maybe they get a different crowd on Saturday nights, and this was just an odd off night.
The staff was generally unfriendly and inattentive. Granted, they were all attractive young girls, but that doesn't help my companions when they've reached the bottom of their glasses without being checked on, or offered another. I think perhaps I'm spoiled by the staff at the College St. location, because they really do go above and beyond. It just might not be enough to make sure the walls are the same colour, and the booths are upholstered in the same tartan. Quality of service must be consistent between the two locations.
