  • This is an updated review based on our second visit. Suffice it to say, our first visit did not go especially well and my review reflected that. The management team at The Otheroom recognized that they were experiencing some "staffing/service" issues and reached out to us and asked us to come give them another try after they had rectified the issue. I realize that in this day and age it's hard to know what is a legitimate complaint/review and what isn't, so I really give the management team here credit (particularly Ryan and Dara) for reaching out and extending a personal invitation to return; right down to arranging a date and time so we could meet face to face. That's a level of personal interest and concern that is pretty hard to find these days. Daniel was our bartender/mixologist and let me tell you, if you can arrange to go there when he's working, do it. That guy is amazing! And it's obvious that he loves what he does. We tried a few drinks from the menu; Deer in Headlights, Grow a Pear, and Kiss My Melons, all of which were fabulous, although Deer in Headlights was my favorite of the bunch. But then Daniel told us he specializes in custom cocktails based on your drink preferences. My wife named her favorite drink from a different well-known cocktail establishment and his response was "let me see if I have the ingredients". He did and like any true artist he added his own twist which actually made the drink even better. So she drank two. Then he made me one of his specialties, which is a smoked old fashioned. Not only is it fun to watch him make this drink because he is actually burning wood shavings and piping the smoke into a chamber where your drink lies in wait to be enveloped and enhanced by the smoke but it was an absolute treat to drink. Smooth, smoky and truly enjoyable. After that he wanted to make me something custom, now that he was getting a sense of what I liked. Here's what he came up with, on the spot. A variation of a "Bees Knees" with Rye Whiskey, Coriander Bitters and Prickly Pear Bitters. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the best drinks I've ever had. He nailed it, first try. The man's an artisan. I don't want to stifle your creative juices Daniel but if you haven't decided on a name for that yet, might I suggest something simple, like say "The Fitzgerald" or "Fitzy's Knees" or maybe "The Old Man Fitz". Just throwing it out there. We also tried a number of their food options. The chicken lollipops were delicious. The charcuterie plate included a nice selection of aged meats, cheeses and a little fruit. The street tacos were awesome. And the large chocolate chip cookie served hot from the oven in a skillet was a great end to the evening. We were a little nervous to return (after all, I had left them a negative review and not many places appreciate that) but they alleviated those concerns within minutes of walking in the door. I think every manager and employee approached us, chatted with us and offered personal apologies for the previous experience. It's clear that they have a vision for The Otheroom and they want to ensure every experience there is a great one. We weren't sure what to expect for our second visit but we left feeling like we were part of the team, part of The Otheroom family. It was pretty astounding. Honestly an experience that would be hard to repeat. But that won't stop us from trying. We've found our new local haunt.
