  • Good German food done at home is hard to do and time consuming IF you are not a native accustomed to the techniques required for more complex recipes like sauerbraten and rindsrouladen. How fortunate we are to have Waldhorn in Pineville (Charlotte)! I love sauerbraten and Waldhorn's chef does it right. However... MORE SPECIAL is Waldhorn's rindsrouladen... it is NOT a taste that is EASY to prepare with a well-balanced blending of flavors. It is difficult enough that most restaurants fall far short of serving outstandingly delicious rouladen! Most of the time I would never order this at a German restaurant as my ONLY entree selection without a personal endorsement I trusted. The first time at Waldhorn was NO different... except it was included in the Waldhorn sampler selection the first time I tried it. WOW!!! I was enjoying a draft Spaten Dark, red cabbage, spatzle, and sampler servings of 3 entrees... a sausage that was very tasty, a piece of jagerschnitzel, and the rouladen which I will order again as my entree next time I go to Waldhorn. Everyone does not have a taste for this entree and some would not even want to "acquire" a taste for it. I understand... but I also spent my college days in a town that had 3 excellent German restaurants and a huge German ethnic populace. I spent a lot of time dining in these establishments. For those who appreciate German beers, Waldhorn is sure to have several selections that will please... a dozen on draft and over two dozen bottled choices. ALL of them are served VERY COLD in FROSTY MUGS. Goes so well with the complimentary pretzel rolls served... and you can get SECONDS, but they'll charge for the beer! An interesting highlight to the meal at Waldhorn was OUR SERVER for the evening... she had been very pleasant and attentive to our requests & questions. Later during our meal I mentioned HOW SPECIAL I thought the rouladen was & she was very candid. She had been born in Germany & was in Charlotte going to college. She volunteered that she was not especially fond of rouladen made by anyone other than her mom, BUT she added that Waldhorn did rouladen as good or maybe better than her mom! She loves the rouladen at Waldhorn! Now THAT is what I would classify as a "credible personal endorsement." As for decor and ambiance... authentic architecture, many in authentic dress, authentic live music, festive German geniality. A nice slice of Germany in Pineville. Well worth a visit. The Sunday brunch buffet is great value for what is offered at the brunch buffet price. BE SURE to check out the many desserts... EACH a temptation making it hard ONLY TO CHOOSE the wife-limited number! The crowded parking lot CONFIRMS that most patrons like Waldhorn and are repeat guests! You MAY park on the grass... or get creative if the grass is already claimed.
