I'm a Smiths fan now. Vons was quite good until they acquired Safeway. For some reasons shortly after their acquisition Vons eliminated their express checkout which allowed customers to scan and pay for their own groceries.
I grew to like the express checkout especially when their regular checkout line was crowded and I only had a few items.
I recently stopped by Vons early in the morning (~ 7am) to grab a few items (hand carry). When I went to the checkout line there were about 10 people already in front of me and one checker (really!). I heard her call out over the intercom "3's a crowd". Now most people waiting in line were of the same thought as me - that is we went early to Vons to grab a few items before it became to crowded (weekend). I could tell many in line were flustered. I commented to one lady waiting in line that I missed the express checkout. She acknowledged that and said she is threw shopping at Vons and will go to Smiths' now. I agreed.
I feel that Vons management now is only concerned about the bottom line and to hell with their customers. I asked a couple of cashiers why they eliminated their express checkout when their competition uses them. I heard a couple of different explanations. One was theft and the other was that Safeway didn't use express checkout so Vons elected to eliminate them. Now if its theft, in my opinion, Vons can staff a six person express checkout registers with one or two dedicated staff and monitor their customers adequately to stem theft. This would still be cheaper than staffing 6 full-time registers. So, I don't buy the theft argument. Also Walmart, Smiths ;etc.. effectively implement express checkout.
My only conclusion is Vons is trying to cut cost and increase revenue. So by eliminating the express checkout they can add more shopping isles. I think you have the CFO running the company and his/her focus is on increasing net profit at the expense of their customers. This will backfire in the end and result in a slow decline in their customer base. I was a dedicated Vons customer, but no longer. What really bothers me is that Vons eliminated the express checkout, but haven't seemed to increase their staff. I've noticed in general now when I was going to Vons how the lines and wait times have grown longer. My last visit to Vons was the last straw! Anyone agree?
