It had been a while since I visited La Gourmandine and stopped by today after running some errands. Unfortunately, since it was after noon, many of my favorites were sold out (boo!) but this gave me a chance to sample some new treats.
I got an apple and hazelnut tart. It was good-the pastry was super crumbly but not overbuttery but there were maybe only two small pieces of hazelnut on each tart.
I got the cinnamon roll (don't recall the french name) and it was wonderful-very flaky, buttery and just the right amount of sugar and cinnamon.
I also got the pain du chocolat and it was sublime. The chocolate was semi-sweet and super good and the pastry was flaky and buttery.
The only reason I am giving La Gourmandine 4 stars is that I received poor service. I told the girl at the counter that I would be getting at least 5 or 6 things (ergo, the need for a largish container). Instead of getting a box, she started SHOVING 2-3 pastries into bags clearly designed for 1. When I asked her if she could put everything in a box, she was very put out. I'm hoping that maybe she's new and didn't know any better, but clearly putting 6 pieces of beautiful pastry (including tarts) in "penny candy" bags makes no sense even if you're a new employee.
