| - It finally happened! After an eternity we finally got to visit Matt's on a day (Veteran's Day to be exact) when the line was only about 10 minutes long. We've been hesitant about the new location after years of eating at the original location, would the new location totally suck, would the food be different, would it be "downtown cold and impersonal"? We had this fear that Matt's had hit the big time and that old comfy place was gone forever.
Well, not so. The area when you first walk in has an uncanny feeling that you are in the old Matt's. The same is true with that weird little closed off room in the front; it had a lot of memories of that weird little closed off room to the left when you walked into the old Matt's. The big dining room has the biggest changes, and guess what? I didn't dislike it. It had that loud high-school cafeteria feeling to it still, tables packing in tight, funky but not pretentious (hard to do). The overworked staff was just as much "family" as in the old Matt's. The menu looked identical, the prices looked about the same, the portions were ... okay, not so "big" as I recall. Big yes compared to Denny's for about the same price (eeech, like someone would actually choose Denny's) but to my memory not quite so overwhelming as it used to be.
Bottom line: the "new" Matt's is still Matt's to me. I'm flexible and I can adapt. My rating is still zero stars, hated it, horrible food and service, cockroaches in the food, a place even a homeless person wouldn't eat for free ... that "rating" is for the newbies. Please stay away until us locals have had our leisurely meal at Matt's, then make your reservation for, um let's say, about 2 AM on a Tuesday and get your butt out of there in 5 minutes or less to leave some tables for us "Matt-afficionados".
Biggest NEGATIVE? They deleted all of the old reviews just because they moved to the other end of the same block. BOO! That to me is just kind of chickenshit. If you want to be so pretentious, change your frigging name. Otherwise just man up to the fact that a review for Matt's Big Breakfast should be a review forever. You lost a whole star for that crap, Matt.
