| - This place has got a great formula:
Heart rate monitors and daily updated workout information
+ knowledgeable instructors
+ varied routines
= invested and loyal clientele
I've been a member or Orange Theory Fitness (OTF) for about two months now and it's taken me some time to decide on my review. I have been to two different gyms in town and have experienced approximately 8 different instructors. And I feel qualified to say that for people who have been looking for a system that includes consistent strength/resistance training with a cardio focus, this is your spot.
There is plenty of information on their website about their philosophy and methodology. What I like about them is the organized nature of the routines and the expertise of the instructors. I've only been to one class with a disappointing instructor and even then, I would say that that person would be middle of the road at other big name gyms.
This Summerlin branch is doing so many things right. They have a fantastic staff at the front who immediately make you feel welcome. They remember you from phone calls and combine professionalism and friendly banter when dealing with guests. It's a great way to start the workout. Add to that the effectiveness of the instructors and efficient nature of the gym itself, and you have a winning combination.
Then there are the workouts. They are tough. But not impossible where a beginner should feel intimidated. In each class there are very fit folks and those starting (or restarting) their fitness journey. They rotate you between rowing machines, treadmills and lots of strength exercises. I love that they use lots of different equipment and exercises to vary the strength/resistance workouts. 1/2 of the class starts on the treadmills while the other 1/2 starts on the rowing machines. Usually the rowing group will do strength/resistance work as well, but I have seen instructors vary that formula. Generally each group stays on their respective machines/equipment for approximately 25 min.
One thing I really like about their program is that when you are on the treadmill, you can choose to do the 'power walking' workout, the 'jogging' workout, or the 'running' workout. This way the instructor can give a short direction and the walker is being pushed to his limit while the runner to his right is being pushed to hers.
The trainers are here to assist with exercise form and keep the class moving. They are helpful and keep the whole class moving. They don't stand over you barking orders, but they are watching your movements and the data on the screen. The numbers at the end of class tell a tale---you don't want cheat yourself here.
They give you time and targets to reach and you work to the best of your ability within those limits. While all of this is going on, your heart rate is being monitored and displaced on a screen. The instructors may say that they expect you to be in the "green zone" by the end of the warm up or in the "orange zone" while starting on the treadmill. The color coded zones align with your heart rate and other data. They have a calculation for how many calories you are supposed to burn after the workout. I am not convinced/focused on those numbers. But they are there for those who are interested.
What I know is this: my clothes fit better since going and I am definitely performing better at each session.
You can pay for 4 sessions monthly (approx. $50), 8 sessions monthly (approx. $90), or unlimited sessions (approx. $150). The first class if free (first two classes in June).
Then you get a performance summary emailed to you after each session. I LOVE looking at that information. If I was tracking, I could log my calories burn, average and max heart rate, and my zones (as percentages) during the one hour class.
They have an app that I use to track what workouts I will do each week. You can sign up for your classes on the app (or so I'm told--my log in never works) as well. Be sure to cancel 12 hours ahead of time if you have to cancel a class. They charge $12 (a full class) for a missed class. I learned the hard way.
I've seen all ages and fitness levels pushing themselves at this gym. And being successful. And sweating. And loving it. I am impressed with what they are doing at this OTF. And as sore as I am, I can't wait to go back.
