  • Durant's is a household name in the valley when it comes to steakhouses and fine dining; unfortunately our experience for my moms birthday the other night left much to be desired despite the $250.00 bill. Starting with the positives, the atmosphere and ambiance is absolutely lovely and wonderful. The red velvet walls, gorgeous old fashioned red booths, and the overall charm of the restaurant cannot be beat; you will not find any place like it. The traditional environment takes you back to the good old days and leaves you feeling relaxed. We had a reservation and did not have to wait at all. the table was ready for us right away. Our waiter greeted us promptly and took our drink orders which came soon thereafter along with the crudité platter of beautiful celery, carrots, onions, and olives (best olive I have ever had). We studied the menu for a while and then decided to go with the prime rib/side salad/garlic mashed potatoes, large filet mignon/side salad/twice baked potato, ribeye/chili/garlic mashed potatoes, and onion rings. Once we ordered our waiter brought us the leek and butter garlic bread which was outstanding...holy smokes I could eat that all the time. It all went downhill after that... We waited and waited and waited for our food to arrive. We also were without drinks for a long time on multiple occasions (we were drinking water and diet cokes, so it wasn't a bar drink we were waiting for). Our salads and chili arrived and they were very mediocre. Oh well, we had enough bread to tide us over until our real meal came. We waited and waited some more and finally our meat arrived. The prime rib was cooked well, but it was so chewy and rubbery that it was pretty difficult to eat. I am a prime rib aficionado, and this was definitely lacking in flavor and texture. The filet mignon was WAY too done; it was overly charred and close to burnt and tasted awful. The twice baked potato was over done as well and was difficult to eat because it was too hard. The ribeye however got decent reviews, but wasn't anything to write home about. The garlic mashed potatoes were good as well, but they weren't anything fantastic either. However the onion rings were crispy and flavorful. For the steep price tag and reputation of Durant's we were expecting greatness both in food and service, but we were extremely disappointed and left wanting more. We all decided that we would much prefer Ruth's Chris, Flemings, or Capital Grill next time.
