  • Before I start with the bad, I will say that the ICU saved my mom's life. Of course the hospital was the one who put her in danger in the first place, but still ICU was excellent. My mom went to same day surgery for an elective knee replacement. While waiting for her to come out, my friend and I saw a corpse in a body bag being wheeled through the lobby/waiting area for families waiting for their loved ones to come out of surgery! Very upsetting and terrifying, and should have been an omen! After my mom's surgery she was moved to her room, where she threw up and immediately started not feeling well. I kept telling nurses, but they just kept giving her anti-nausea meds. all night she suffered getting progressively worse. Hot, sick and not herself. I kept telling nurses, but you get the feeling that they are rolling their eyes pretty soon. She would not eat the next day, would not drink, and was incoherent. Someone said, well it sometimes can take 2-3 days to come out of anesthesia. I tried to explain that this is not my mom. Someone asked if she was coherent at home! What? Of course, she only came in to get her knee done so we could travel and take walks easier! No one was taking this seriously! I knew something was wrong. Well at about 6:30 pm the day after the surgery, she had a seizure! Thank God I was in the room with her as they would not have known, and who knows what could have happened? Thank God! I ran out screaming and told them to get in there that my Mom was having a seizure. Let me be clear: she has NEVER had a seizure before. I cannot tell you the agony and fear I felt. Again thank God in His mercy that she is doing well now. Well, there was an excellent doctor who moved my mom quickly to ICU where she was given a through-line of sodium to raise her levels, and also a blood transfusion. Here is what happened: Prior to surgery, her sodium level was 139, normal.(I only found this out after getting med records...) After surgery it started to plummet. At 4 am it was 127: Below normal! At this point, if the dr assigned to my moms case would have started to raise the sodium, she would not have had the seizure. When she had the seizure it was 122! This should never have happened! I have gone through channels to complain, but have not heard back from the doctor who was in charge and saw the blood tests and could have prevented my Mom from going through this. Again the doctor who moved my mom to ICU after the incident was great, the doctor assigned to her on the ortho floor is the one who should have caught this. Please do not go to this hospital! Had we known, she would have gone to CA to UCLA, Stanford, or Cedar's Sinai, all of which have been named as great hospitals. As a happy ending to this nightmare, she is doing great now, even done with physical therapy! I can't thank God enough!
