| - So the good: I had been here once before and sampled their Napoleon (made on the premises). It was good (hard to see what the pastries look like (apart from the top) because of the pink paper that surrounds the sides of each slice of cake/pastry (apart from cupcakes of course). Most recently I had a slice of black forest cake. Most of the pastries in the case look like typical-chemical-Metro-Loblaws-Sobeys-chain grocery store bakery slices, but that's where the similarity ends. The black forest cake is satisfying, chocolatey without being too sweet and the contrast of the cherry filling is very satisfying. I could taste the quality of ingredients used. The tea selection could use more than pesticide laden Lipton tea (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/pesticide-traces-in-some-tea-exceed-allowable-limits-1.2564624) but I did manage to grab the last piece of Stash organic tea. My slice of cake and a cup of tea came to $7.35. Not cheap, but the cake was definitely worth it. The young girl serving me was helpful and answered all of my questions (it was a bit hard to hear with the front door open and trucks rumbling by) and repeated whatever was drowned out by passing vehicles. She really took her time and helped me narrow down what I felt like having and was very patient.
Now for the not so good: The decor is...well, I get that the owner is a cancer survivor, but it does look like pink threw up in there (and I'm actually a big fan of the colour) but the solid pink fabric is just too heavy looking for the light interior. A vase of fresh flowers would certainly give a fresh feel. The white breast cancer tree on the counter was not something that I feel is really helpful in helping me choose a pastry/wanting to donate to the casue. Rant Warning: We're innudated with breast cancer runs, fundraisers, pink appliances, underwear, stickers, electronics etc. etc. on a daily basis. As a daughter of a breast cancer survivor (twice) I get it, but am I at a fundraiser rally or buying a pastry? I get that the owner is appreciative but I want to buy a pastry. If I choose to donate/support the cause, then that's a separate issue. Rant over.
Okay, so the cupcakes. I had a lemon and a chocolate. The lemon cupcake itself was great, lemony and light tasting, not too sweet. The icing, however, was WAAAY too sugary. Too bad. The chocolate cupcake was okay - the server knew I was jonesing for chocolate and offered to put chocolate filling in the centre for me. The chocolate icing was also too sweet and sugary as well.
Would I come back? For the cake slices? Definitely. I plan on working my way through the entire case, based on the Napoleon and Black Forest slice. Is this a place that is for the sugar/dairy/wheat conscious? Hell no, but I sure enjoyed that cake, that's for sure!
