| - Call off the dogs - the search is over. I have found Cleveland's best cupcakes.*
I'm not sure why the West Side Market is generally only reviewed as a whole, rather than with reviews for individual stands. But I think this place deserves special mention, even among the greatness that is the Market.
Thanks to a fellow Yelper, I learned of this bake stand and set out to taste-test. What a discovery. First of all, the cupcakes are totally affordable. They have minis for $1, which are better on your budget and, more importantly, your waistline. Although if you're like me and just use the excuse to sample more varieties, those benefits are likely lost. And sadly, they don't carry all flavors in the minis. I wish they did. But even the massive cupcakes, which are probably dessert for 3 people, are only $2. What a steal!
Flavors vary, it seems, but there is a wide variety. Of course there are all the classics, but I also love ones like Buckeye, Smores, Peanut Butter Cup, etc. My go-to red velvet was nearly perfect. Cake was so moist and fluffy! I find dry cupcakes to be a common problem. Maybe at the market, because there are limited shopping windows, cupcakes are less likely to sit around a long time and get stale? The cream cheese frosting on the red velvet was the perfect balance of cheese flavor, but plenty of sweetness, so as not to be tangy or sharp. I could eat these red velvets all day.
I also tried the Smores and Buckeye. The Smores was good, but oddly didn't evoke the smores flavor to me. It had all the components, including graham flavored cake mixed in with chocolate, and a layer of marshmallow creme under the white frosting. All was tasty, and I had no trouble finishing it, but the smores idea eluded me. The Buckeye, however, was a wonderful incarnation. Again, so fluffy and moist! It's a nice antidote to rich cupcakes, because they don't leave you feeling like you have bricks in your stomach. All peanut butter and chocolate lovers should try the Buckeye.
I have to say it's a good thing the Market is only open rarely (effectively only on Saturdays, for those of us who work regular hours). Because I should definitely not be allowed to have more than one of these cupcakes a week. But I can safely say there will never be a trip to the Market for me that does not involve a cupcake from Grandma Freda's.
*Of course, I am always willing and able to sample more cupcakes, so if you think there's somewhere better I have yet to try, do let me know.
