Last October, because of the usual issue with the streetcar route around Spadina and College, and being forced to take a stroll to get my destination somewhere past Little Italy, I popped inside this cafe for the first time last October, to take a rest with a much need cup of coffee. It was also a glimpse through the window that got my curious to see what this cafe offered.
There is a very appealing display of numerous cakes and cookies and a rack displaying several types of bread. Both times that I've been here I had a hard time trying to pick just the right pastry or cake to try. The first time, I paired up my coffee with what looked like a miniature cross between an Empanada and a Curry Puff which tasted alright with a meat filing inside. But all those cakes and pastries had my me wanting to come back at a better time.
On recent second visit, I wanted to try other items so I got a Walnut Brownie and a bread pastry filled with slices of salami, which resembled a French Fougasse. The bread would have tasted better if it was toasted a bit to warm it up and it would also have brought out of the flavor of the salami.
The brownie was also decadent and I was able to get about six small squares out of the large portion of it. And I was already feeling full after the first two pieces.
I was with a cafe buddy that day and he also got this lemon square for himself and he cut it up the same way. I actually copied how he cut it up and it actually helps to get a better taste of the cake.
Since we were there for awhile I also had tasty Mochaccino before we called it an evening.
The prices for the cakes are pretty reasonable. I was surprised by the low price of the brownie which would probably be sold for about $3.50 at a different cafe.
It's nice that the Golden Wheat isn't always too busy and crowed so that on both occasions the atmosphere is a bit private and that allows you to get some comfortable space at your table.
I will be returning again to take home more of those lovely cakes and pasteries :-)
