  • IF YOU VALUE YOUR LIFE OR THE LIFE OF YOUR LOVED ONES DO NOT LIVE HERE!!! FIRE HAZARDOUS!!!! I come to you today appauled after a fire was started due to a bad water heater in my unit. On February 1st at 2:18 am my boyfriend woke me up because he smelled something burning, we then saw there was fire coming out of our "storage" unit. We rushed into action despite being in complete shock and discombobulated since we just woke up. We grabbed the fire extinguisher and my boyfriend proceeded to put out the fire that had engulfed our balcony with the help of a few neighbors, who saw me standing there in just my underwear and a tshirt, as I called 911. We all fought through the smoke which we also unfortunately inhaled quite a bit of. We exited the unit awaiting assistance; shortly after the fire department arrived. They checked to make sure it was safe to reenter inside before they continued to evaluate the damage. In dismay I began to clean the flith caused by the substantial amount of smoke and ash which blanketed the bedroom and was dragged around the floor with every foot step. They then called their superior to do a second check as we anticipated the arrival of the manager. As we waited the fire fighter, as well as I, was concerned that my smoke detector failed to alarm us of the fire and did not sound the entire time smoke entered the unit. Around 3:40 am the situation began to come to a close with the conclusion the water heater had started a fire and the pilot light did not subside. The fire fighter then told me he usually recommends the area around the water heater stay clear even though my floor plan clearly labeled that space as "storage" ( just for future reference to inform new residents). I was then told it would be in my best interest to find a place to stay for the night because the air we were inhaling was "cancerous fumes" and that "we shouldnt have to die sooner than expected". He also told me to wash everything that was exposed to the smoke and ash because it was hazardous. Unfortunately I was unable to do so because the washer was out of order due to the water heater setting on fire. I also have no relatives in this state to go to during such a traumatic event like this. I proceeded to sleep on my living room floor with no blankets just with a sheet I found in the closet with my windows open trying to remove the foul odor and chemical ridden air that now flowed throughout my apartment. As I was freezing laying there in shock with knots in my stomach I had to then run my heat all night to make up for the cold air being let in by the windows draining the money I had just supplied my SRP box with. I was unable to sleep the rest of the night maybe dosing off with exhaustion for 2 hours. By 10 am i still received no update on the situation even though I was informed the issue would be handled by 12 pm. At 12:17 pm I arrived at the leasing office with tears in my eyes wondering what would be done to fix the matter, they had no idea what unit I was in nor where the water heater was. I was then told that it would arrive in about an hour and a half but that they would call me when the maintenance would begin. I did not receive one. My boyfriend, who so lovingly took the day off to stay with me, called me at 2 pm saying they had arrived. The work was completed at 3:30 pm so it took 10 hours for me to be able to shower off the ash from my body. I was told that because of the incident from fire hazard of a water heater that my balcony would be cleaned as well as my carpets and my blinds fixed. Until then I was forced once more to sleep in my living room especially because smell lingered from the balcony into the room. I awoke on February 2nd expecting a call  when the leasing office opened at 9, I did not. These inconvenienced me so deeply especially since the fire was due to issues I inherited upon signing my lease. Office staff mentioned the unit was empty for so long they were  offered an incentive to finally lease it. This leads me to the conclusion the unit i was given was neglected for months and if it wasnt the fire could have been avoided.
