A pleasant shop that needs better labeling.
I've known about Penzeys for years but had never been in one of their shops. While killing time until an appointment nearby I decided to stop in and have a look around. I was considering treating myself to a fancier cinnamon than you get in the grocery store, but I couldn't find it. I made about three loops of the store and managed to miss the display entirely. It was around the holidays so they were quite busy; it's entirely possible someone was just blocking the display. However, I felt like I had to get right up to a shelf to see what spice was what, and I couldn't discern any sort of order (by alphabet, cuisine, etc.).
Again, I'll admit it's totally possible in the hustle and bustle of the holidays that my brain was just not putting two and two together, but clear labeling above the shelves would go a long way. From my photo I am reminded the large signs only give general clues like "herbs" and "spices."
I'll have to stop in another time when it's not so busy and give it a good walkthrough without having to dodge holiday shoppers. Prices are a bit steep, but it's also guaranteed to be higher quality and fresher than the mass-produced plastic bottles you find at the grocer.
