| - Growing up in Toronto, it was always so exciting to visit the EX every year but, once I got older, I would tend to have less patience for crowds and line-ups. I haven't been in about six years so when my office offered up some passes, my friends and I decided to reconvene our high school tradition of going toward the end of August.
One of the positives was that, although there was a huge crowd of people, it was very civilized. I didn't see a lot of police around and, quite frankly, was comfortable with it because patrons appeared to be on their best behavior.
We visited a lot of booths but one that really stood out was Sandhill Nursery (in the Enercare Centre). Apparently they were voted best new booth. They sold beautiful, one-of-a-kind, handcrafted items for both indoors and out. I picked up a gorgeous reclaimed log that was made into a candle holder for only $15. One of the ladies that was working there was so nice and kept our bags until we were ready to leave the EX.
There were also a lot of local Toronto artists that showcased original Toronto paintings such as the CN Tower from the lake, the flatiron building, Honest Eds, streetcars, etc. Some of the art was quite pricy though but I can see a tourist maybe purchasing some pieces.
The alcoholic beverages were just hugely inflated - very comparable to Skydome prices. As for the food building - nasty! I can't believe I got talked into eating there. Which, by the way, almost ruined my day. I went to the Steak and Cheese Factory because it was one of the only vendors that accepted debit. Plus, the lineup seemed to be moving along quickly - at least that's what I thought. While I stood in the lineup, a girl came around and took everyone's orders and gave us slips with the number on it to listen for when you were called. Anyway, paid and was told to wait at the side. Can I just tell you that I waited over one hour to get my sandwich!!! They were so disorganized that they were calling up numbers way out of sequence and people, including me, where getting so angry. We couldn't even get our money back because they'd direct you to the end of the line. When I finally got the food and met my friends, they were already finished eating their gross Greek food from Ithaca Greek Cuisine by then! I don't even know if my sandwich tasted good or not because, by that time, I lost my appetite. So, WARNING - DO NOT VISIT STEAK AND CHEESE FACTORY!!! I would avoid the aforementioned Greek place too because the chicken souvlaki dinner (with rice and salad) looked like mock chicken meat with porridge and torn up tree leaves - they all felt sick after.
As for the rides, they were just as I remembered them! We went on the Polar Express, Wave Swinger and Mega Drop!
All in all, it was a super fun day!
