| - Being a supporter of local restaurants, I've been to Barrio a few times. Each time, I hoped that the food and service would get better. Unfortunately, that is not the case.
We had a party of 8 go to Barrio for dinner. Once seated, it took quite a long time for our server to greet us. We asked for frozen margaritas (common request in a Mexican restaurant). The server told us that on-the-rocks was better and that she didn't know if they made frozen ones. Fine, we'll take it on-the-rocks. She returned with frozen margaritas. Initially, we had 2 servers, then both servers seemed to have disappeared completely.
That night, 5 of the 8 meals were incorrect. I ordered the fish tacos, and I got shrimp tacos. Some ordered black beans, and got pinto beans. My sister asked for a side of rice and she got fries. We sent the food back and it took a minimum of 15-20 minutes to get replacements. By that point, most of the party had finished their dinner. To add insult to injury, the bill was wrong.
The manager attempted to fix the situation by taking 50% off the "wrong" bill and giving us gift certificates. After 20 more minutes, the bill was settled and we were on our way.
Against my better judgement, myself and 1 other person went back. We wanted to give them one more try (maybe they had a bad night). We went around 5PM on a Sunday. We figured it was less busy and maybe it would be better.
We asked for a table for 2 and the hostess attempted to seat us crammed in between 2 other tables when there were PLENTY of open seating. We asked for a different table.
Once seated, the server was pretty attentive. She made sure our drinks were filled and overall did a good job.
We ordered some food off the "new" menu and it was mostly below average and nothing special. I thought it was interesting that I could get chicken with asparagus and mashed potatoes in a Mexican restaurant.
Nonetheless, we went to pay with our 2 gift certificates and the server came back and said one of them wasn't activated. She said we should come back and try to use them some other time. Since we had such terrible experience with the bill last time, we almost left after having to put cash out for another terrible meal at Barrio.
But, changed our mind, and talked to the SAME manager who gave us the gift certificates to begin with. We could tell that it was going to be a sorted process trying to fix the situation. All I wanted was a refund to our card and to pay for the meal with the gift certificate. She asked if we had some time for them to "figure it out". We didn't.
We ended up leaving with ANOTHER gift certificate. Great.
Please know that I'm not usually a complainer. But, am hoping that everyone who reads this review knows how terrible this restaurant is. And I'm thinking it will have the same fate that every other restaurant in that location has had.
Bottom line, we live in Arizona, if you're going to have a Mexican restaurant, it better be great. With so many to choose from, why would you pick an overpriced Scottsdale wannabe, with bad food, bad service, tucked into a Walmart parking lot, in between Outback and a Chinese buffet?
if you want authentic spicy Mexican food, go to Los Dos Molinos in South Phoenix. If you're looking for trendy atmosphere, good food, incredible service, go to Blanco in Old Town Scottsdale.
You will not be disappointed.
