| - LOVED THIS MUSEUM. If I can give you one tip, it's to eat a large meal before you come here. I missed some stuff because I was so hungry/tired that I started whizzing past exhibits toward the end of my visit.
It's very large and divided into sections: Africa and Middle East, Asia, Oceania, Europe and United States. Each of those sections is divided into smaller sections by country. Each country has a video of traditional music being played and you get to listen via headphones (provided upon entry). They even addressed culturally rich ethnic groups that did not fit in with a particular country (such as the Kurds and the Roma people). They also had some ancient instruments.
I am a little put off by the critical reviews that condemn this museum for exhibiting very similar instruments. Yes, some of the African countries have similar instruments - drums are very popular. Don't forget, they also have videos of the people performing traditional dances and playing instruments. They also point out that country on a map and provide a cultural background. It's not just instruments - it's a lesson in culture and geography. What do you suggest - oh, they're all the same really, let's just lump them into one category? I really enjoyed seeing the Russian instrument section because I am Russian. To consolidate the instruments to eliminate redundancy would rob someone from Burkina Faso or Benin of that experience. What makes this museum so awesome is its ability to unite the people of the world in this common experience and just for a moment, forget about all the violence and bigotry and hatred that takes place all over the world on a daily basis. Music is a common language and here we are, celebrating each country's musical culture. Anyway, if you can't handle another bongo drum, keep it moving, you have that option.
Oh and the gift shop was fantastic. Such a great variety of items and souvenirs.
It is $20 (Adult) to get in and I didn't see any discount options. At first, I thought it was a bit much but there is a lot to see. However, there was no tax at the gift shop so that helped.
