| - We had a great dinner experience for my last night in Vegas! I had been to the Border Grill in Pasadena (which closed a few years ago) and loved it, so I guess I knew I would like it here before I sat down.
We had reservations for 9:30pm and were seating as soon as we walked in. Our table was in the middle of the room, which was crowded, but the table was large so I was comfortable.
We were brought water immediately and our server got our drinks in maybe 3 min. at the most. They were really busy and the servers seemed to be really on top of it. HONEYDEW MARGARITAS. oh boy.
The waiter told us to try the plantain empanadas, and i didn't need much persuasion. plantains are a favorite, pablano chilis are my favorite and i put cotija cheese on everything, so basically this was a match made in heaven for my mouth! (they also have black beans in them, which i prefer over pinto, but still usually stay away from). The three of us liked them so much we ordered a second serving.
At this point we knew we were in trouble. I was already getting full and we hadn't even had our entrees yet.
Round 3 of margaritas had just arrived as my main course of Chile Rellenos was placed in front of me. The dish comes with rice and beans but I asked them to substitute their mashed sweet potatoes and garlic vegetables instead. The mashed sweet potatoes may have plantains in them too, or something else tangy. They were buttery and hot. I was soooo stuffed about 3 bites in...but I kept going.
My bf ordered Pibil thanks to my recommendation, which is a stewed pork dish. OMG I ate a lot of his. They add cinnamon to their sauce and it really gives the pork a whole new flavor. Its subtle but not just spicy......its aromatic. AND it comes with plantain orange salsa, which was asked for a bowl of because we all loved it soooo much!
My friend had chicken enchiladas, which she always orders. These are hard to do wrong, and usually are good everywhere you get them....even Taco Bell. She likes them with a lot of vegies, which is exactly what she got on top. Corn, peppers, onions, mushrooms......(i am allergic, so I didn't try her dish).
We also foolishly ordered a caesar salad to share. It was really crispy and the cilantro dressing was good, but TOOOOO MUCH FOOD.
Round 5 of margaritas......i don't feel so good and I'm giggling like an english school boy.
time to relax. we let ourselves digest for about 10 mins....then the damn waiter told us about the desserts. and, well......when in Vegas, right?
Mexican Chocolate Pie. GOOD GOD. I died and heaven was in my mouth.
Orange Cheesecake. So creamy, so good. I only got a little bite because the boyfriend did not want to share (maybe because I didn't let him try mine.....)
My friend opted not to have dessert and instead played on her iphone. Fool. The dessert was fantastic!!!!
All the food was complex and unique. Its not Mexican, its not Tex-Mex, its not Brazilian, its not Oaxacan, its not Argentinian, nor Peruvian.
Its Border Grill.
P.S.- Even though we were all dressed up and ready to go to out.....we waddled our way back to our room, lay on my bed and watched a movie. I couldn't even take off my shoes.
