I had an odd experience with Alson.
The associate I spoke to was welcoming and friendly. I explained that I'd recently been engaged and needed to have my ring sized down. She asked to look at the ring and quickly sounded troubled that it was a vintage piece. She explained that she did not recommend resizing the ring and in fact said that if I did I'd have problems with it "forever."
I was so stunned and asked her to clarify what she meant, and she said again that she simply would not resize it, something having to do with the age of the piece and the type of platinum used. At the time the ring was so large that I was wearing it on my middle finger, not my ring finger, and it was upsetting to have someone say, essentially, tough luck!
Many months later I took the ring to a different store and explained the whole story to them. They were utterly perplexed as to why someone would have told me such a thing. There was absolutely no issue that prevented my ring from being sized down - nothing at all. In fact the associates at the new store asked me to retell the story a number of times because they could not fathom what the issue would have been. (We ended up buying our wedding bands from the second store and I've been back several times for other things as well.)
I must state again that the Alson associate was at no time unpleasant or rude in any way - it was just sort of a "yeah, sorry about your luck" type of thing. It remains one of the most puzzling experiences I've had in a retail setting.
