| - I have always wanted to love Pomegrante Cafe, but I have always had hit or miss food and/or service, so I never bothered to return after spring 2013. In February 2016, after a near 3 year hiatus, I finally gave them another go. I tried the raw tacos, a couple of street tacos, and a burger slider from their happy hour menu. The raw taco, served with walnut "meat" was pretty tasty. Everything else was just ok, and I found pieces of real cheese on my vegan plate, so I was thinking it may be another 3 years before I returned.
However, recently they posted items from their Summer 2016 menu, and I was enticed by their new banana split and hush puppy offerings. I figured if I keep giving them chances, it'll eventually pay off.
We went during happy hour (which is 3pm-6pm, Mondays through Saturdays) on Friday, 29July16, and ordered a bunch of different things.
TEPARY I'ITOI HUSH PUPPIES - $12:
I believe that hush puppies are a southern dish (but I won't swear to that), and from where I come, we love them. They are fried balls of cornmeal/bread, mixed with onions and sometimes peppers. My mistake was expecting these to taste like homemade southern hush puppies; they didn't. In their own right, they are pretty good, just not what I was expecting or wanting. Try them for yourself; you may love them! Over-priced.
TU-NUT SALAD SANDWICH - $14:
I omitted the sunflower ranch and tomatoes. I enjoyed this dish. It was a tasty vegan tuna salad version on warm toasty bread. Only some vegan mayo spread on the bread would make it better. The seasonal side was potato salad, and theirs is pretty good. Organic or not, for the portion, it was not worth $14; $10 maybe, but not $14.
GILA MONSTER NACHOS - $8 (HAPPY HOUR PRICE):
This colorful dish comes with a huge heaping of corn chips, walnut taco "meat", beans, jalapeƱo, pico, and guacamole (I omitted the queso and sour cream, but the 1st order came out with both, so they had to remake it). A deliciously satisfying dish which is large enough to share, although you may not want to. The regular price is $12. I would return for this dish any time of the day.
POM BANANA SPLIT - $10:
Sliced banana coins, vegan vanilla ice cream scoops, chocolate syrup, caramel, brownies, and coconut whip cream. The description includes a Pomberry syrup, but I didn't see anything resembling berries or berry syrup. This dish was pretty darn good, but it could've been great if the ice cream didn't taste freezer-burnt. Also, the brownie had nuts in it, and this was not mentioned in their menu description. Luckily, I am not allergic, but those with nut allergies should remember to always ask, as even the healthiest food venues don't always consider allergies when writing their menus. Being that this dish is large enough to share, $8-$10 seems fair if it's in a perfect state (ice cream not icy and all described ingredients included).
DD got the Maca Magic Smoothie ($10), Napoleon Grilled Cheese Sandwich, with real cheese ($15!!), and the Root Beer float ($10). She enjoyed the smoothie and drank almost all of it. She didn't like that grilled cheese sandwich one bit and wasted my $15. The Root Beer float was a hit; it came with 3 scoops of ice cream and a full bottle of root beer for her to pour herself. Personally, I think the smoothie and root beer floats should be about $7-$8 each, not $10. The grilled cheese was completely over-priced.
My cousin ordered the BUFFALO HOT WINGS ($10), JAMAICAN CURRY WEDGES ($8 on HH menu; $12 regular price), BBQ Buffalo Wrap ($14), Macro Bowl ($14), Hibiscus Cooler ($6), and a Banana Split as well. She absolutely loved every single thing that she got, which proves, to each his own.
I tried her Buffalo Hot Wings. The buffalo sauce on the wings was good, but I didn't like the texture of their wings. She loved them. I also tried the Jamaican Curry Wedges... LOL! No. I was expecting hella spice and flavor, but as colorful as was the presentation, it failed to deliver. Maybe under another name they wouldn't have been so disappointing? They were not bad, just not what I expected, given the name. They certainly are not worth the $12 regular menu price. Try for yourself during HH, and save yourself $4.
Even though I wasn't 100% happy with everything, I can appreciate that the food was fresh, filling, and quite tasty. Table service by Brittany was excellent. She was friendly and attentive without being over-present.
The main downfall, aside from location, is that they are just too expensive. If you get a drink, appetizer, main course and dessert, you're already at $50 per person! This isn't New York and they shouldn't be charging Phoenicians that much, organic or not.
