| - Anyone who envisions non-professional theatre in Madison as a, "Hey, kids - let's put on a show!" sort of endeavor has never been to the Bartell. Full stop.
Here's the truth: Madison has an amazing pool of theatrical talent. I'm not just talking about actors, but directors, designers (set, lighting, costumes, props), and producers, too. And the Bartell is where they come together to do their thing for the sheer love of it.
The Bartell is actually two theaters - the Drury (a larger proscenium space upstairs) and the Evjue (a smaller "black box") downstairs. Both spaces are wonderful to see and play in. (Full disclosure: I have acted in many plays at the Bartell - in both theaters.)
The lobby area (recently remodeled) is also nice. Tables and chairs make it easy to relax before the show or at intermission. There is a bar - and it's perfectly permissible to take your adult beverage to your seat. A beer or a glass of wine while you enjoy the show? Yes, please.
And tickets for pretty much any show run about $20 per. You can't beat that price for live theatre. It's one of the true arts bargains in Madison.
Seeing a show at the Bartell is a two-fer: you'll be royally entertained - and support quality, affordable theatre at the same time.
