| - Really reviews of salons should be reviews of stylists. And based on all the (mostly filtered) Yelp reviews there are others who believe that Sylvie at Del Monaco is amazing! I started going to Sylvie in Ottawa by a random fluke and I'm so glad. After a horrible experience at Glam in Toronto and a pretty decent (but not spectacular) cut at Parlour I was pumped when Sylvie moved to TO a couple of years ago. I've been to see her at Del Monaco at least 8 times, and my most recent appointment was a few days ago, so I figured it was about time I wrote a review.
Overall:
- Sylvie is amazing!
- All staff are super friendly
- A bit pricey, but not outrageous for Toronto, and hey when it comes to hair you usually get what you pay for. My cuts with Sylvie are usually in the $80-100 range before tip.
- Nice perks: wine, cappuccino, etc.
- Mod, inoffensive concrete decor with purple (my fave colour) vanities and huge windows (love the sunlight!)
- Stylist team is small and handpicked, so though I love Sylvie I'm sure the others are also great. I think there are only 3, maybe 4 stylists including Eric.
You do pay a bit of a premium at this salon, but as someone who has had some horrible cuts that have taken me years to grow out, I'll pay to know I'm going to leave with great hair! Plus, at least you get stellar service: staff is always super friendly, want a cappuccino, tea, or wine? you got it. And, they usually run pretty on-time with appointments, which is somewhat rare with busy salons. You need to book a bit in advance, they're a pretty high-traffic place. Don't call the day before expecting to get in. It's never any problem to get a bang trim or consult on short notice, but still a good idea to call ahead. This past week I had Sylvie dye my hair for the first time in years and went in to chat about it a week before. For some reason not all salons encourage this, but it's really helpful to talk about ideas and what you want before you're in the time-crunch of your allotted cut and colour slot. One time I was 20 minutes late for a bang trim due to the construction debacle on Spadina. Instead of being pissy about something that was my fault, they fit me in right away.
Obviously the most important thing about the salon is the results. I've always had Sylvie, and can't speak on the other stylists, but I've always loved my results. I have difficult hair. It's super thick, sometimes wavy and frizzy, but somehow Sylvie always manages to tame it and give me some style. I've never had a stylist who seems to know just how far to take it when I want to experiment - she always seems to strike the perfect balance of edgy and my comfort zone. She was the first one to take my hair pretty short and if I decide to hack it all off again I wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. The last couple of years I've kept it long, but Sylvie has been great at coming up with some creative layering to keep it a little interesting. She also has Sassoon training, so if you're looking for a very Sassoon cut, she's your girl. Aside from her scissor skills, Sylvie is fun, bubbly and great to chat with for the couple of hours you're in the salon.
Anytime I've seen clients of Sylvie's leave before I'm in her chair, they all seem to have ear-to-ear smiles, which is a good sign. I also had other friends in Ottawa that used Sylvie and they loved her too, so it's not just me.
I absolutely recommend Del Monaco Hair Studio, especially Sylvie.
