| - I will start by saying that I am not a "fancy coffee" person, meaning that I am more likely to be stopping at a Tim Hortons or CountryStyle on my way somewhere. But from time to time, I will drop in somewhere more upscale, and Dark Horse Espresso seems to be pretty good. Full disclosure: there was a drink mix-up on my first visit, so I decided to return before writing this review. The place itself is nice, very spacious with a high ceiling, two large wooden tables on the main level, and about a dozen small tables on a mezzanine level at the back. The lighting is fairly low on the mezzanine, and it's a little louder than below, but still okay for relaxing or reading. Background music was playing over a few speakers, a lot of Alanis Morissette the second time.
The service is friendly enough, but there was a bit of a wait as they were busy the first time and each drink is made individually. This is where the mix-up came in, because they have no system for identifying who's drink is who's, and it seems that mine was given to someone else. I had a flat white on my first visit, and a cappuccino with a brownie the second time. Some of their pastries were 50% off (after 3pm I think). Both drinks were fine, with well-made designs on top, and the brownie was a good size. Both drinks were $3.50+tax, and the drink and brownie came to about $7. So in summary, definitely a place I would drop in at from time to time, but they should think about taking names when they are busy.
Then I went to Sonic Boom to browse for records since they are right next door; review to follow...
