| - I had always heard of bra fitting but it wasn't until a la Oprah's major and revolutionary bra boutique episode did I start thinking about it. However, it wasn't actually until our very own Canadian Marilyn Dennis had a segment on finding the right fit did I actually book myself an appointment to get one done. That afternoon actually. All the things you are able to check off on the life to-do list when one is unemployed!
I went to Melmira after I confirmed with them over the telephone that there is no obligation to purchase after the fitting. Relieved and feeling like that would be a safe environment I headed for my first fitting. Ever.
It's such a pretty bra store and not in the middle of a loud mall and without a bunch of excited teenage girls shuffling through lacy thongs to fit under or over theoretically their low-rise skinny jeans. Not that there's anything wrong with it, been there, done that. Ok there were no lacy thongs in my teenage years. My father cancelled my subscription to seventeen magazine after the February Valentines Day issue came home. It actually never made it to my bedroom but I found it in the bottom drawer of his dresser. Who's the joke on, now? But, I digress.
The ladies at Melmira were really great. If you end up having cold feet for the fitting once inside the store - there really is no turning back. It's not like you can pretend to be just browsing and skip your appointment because they do not have anything on display here. Its-all-about-the-must-try-it-on-in-a-private-change-room-with-a-bra-expert experience here because they actually bring them in to you.
The fitting: given the option, I opted out for standing shirtless but with a bra on. The expert would politely leave the room as I tried on over 14 bras that she brought in. She asked about the style I was looking for and what my current problems, if, any were with my fitting. She said a true fitting does not include tape measure - it's all in her memory bank. She looked at me in all my glory - bare feet, non-pedicured toes, imprecisely shaved legs and bloated belly - I later, realized she was only interested waist up anyways - she could just tell. She brought bras that all fit really well so now the daunting task was to figure out which one fit bestest.
We never spoke about price and I was kind of shy to ask truthfully - it almost felt rude to ask in such a fine establishment - the girls had never been treated this well. In the end from the bras I saw, the prices ranged from $79 to $150 a bra - depending on the brand and how pretty or intricate/detailed they were. I had never heard of any of those brands before so I had no measure to judge if the prices were reasonable.
The lessons: you are not a particular size. Your sizing depends on the brand and style of bra. It will be different each time.
The pluses: they create a file for you in their database and track all your purchases with style, brand and price information so the next time you can just walk in and simply pick up a bra. I also asked her to record potential future candidates for purchase so my next visit could just be just a pick up.
Overall, I LOVED the fitting and learned so much. I would got back again and recommend everyone to get one.
I told a friend about the experience and raved about the benefits of fittings. She looked unimpressed and said that Victoria's Secret always does that. This friend has always been a dream killer and they use tape measure. So low class.
