| - Graeter's is a regional ice cream chain based in Cincinnati, and they've just opened their first scoop shop in PA. I have bought pints of Graeter's at Giant Eagle in the past and it's some of the best ice cream around. All of their ice cream is made in small batches using the french pot method....this method produces really creamy, dense, rich ice cream, along with super unique chocolate chips (which are more like giant chocolate chunks with a unique soft-yet-toothy texture). Anyway, so I already knew I was a fan of the ice cream and I was thrilled to see that they were setting up shop in the greater Pittsburgh area.
The shop itself is very bright, clean, and spacious....tons of seating available, both indoors and outdoors. In addition to hand scooped ice cream, you can also buy pints and half gallons here, as well as ice cream cakes and other goodies. The flavors of Graeter's that Giant Eagle sells are limited, so I was happy to see that the scoop shop is serving up varieties that I hadn't tried before. The guy who helped us was really friendly and happily allowed me to sample multiple kinds. They have so many great flavors (including several artisanal and seasonal varieties), but I ended up going with a scoop of peanut butter chocolate chip (classic!), while my husband got a scoop of buckeye chocolate chip. We both got our ice cream on a pretzel cone (I've never seen a pretzel cone before, so I just had to try it!) Now, this definitely isn't bargain ice cream....for our two single scoop pretzel cones, it was over $11, which is really steep. However, the ice cream is super high quality, not to mention rich and dense, so a single scoop (albeit expensive) should satisfy most people sufficiently.
As expected, we loved our ice cream....it's probably all in my head, but I swear the ice cream tastes even more creamy and decadent coming from the scoop shop than it does from the grocery store pints. And the pretzel cone was an excellent choice....it was crunchy and added a nice salty contrast to the sweetness of the ice cream. Sweet and salty is always a great combo!
Sign up for a rewards card and you'll earn points with each purchase towards future discounts, and you'll get a free sundae for your birthday. In fact, since our initial visit, we've already been back once to cash in my hubby's birthday freebie. Getting delicious free ice cream just for being born....it doesn't get much better than that!
