Note: we received complimentary tickets to the zoo for the pre-opening of the Lemur Exhibition on July 4 for contractors due to my husband's company doing work for the zoo.
I have been to the zoo numerous times since I arrived here in Calgary. The last three being my favourite because of the company I had. I have avoided the zoo sometimes because it can get really hot in the summer and add tourists and kids on school-break, you get the picture!
I try to aim for a weekday versus a weekend and a slightly cooler month. If this is not possible, it seems to get quiet as the afternoon passes.
The lemur exhibit was fascinating. It was cool to be in their enclosure. Be prepared to leave strollers, soft drink, water bottles, food outside the enclosure. Only a small backpack and phone are permitted.
The penguin exhibit was also a favourite. We spent the most time here.
The gift shop at the entrance/exit is a must stop. They have all kinds of neat toys and souvenirs, especially if you have young kids. I think my little one hugged 25% of the stuffies (lots to choose from). The young lady who helped us was especially pleasant.
I will be honest: I do find it difficult to go to the zoo because it must be sad to live far away from your natural surroundings. That said, the zoo staff seemed attentive to the animals. I also am grateful for conservation efforts and research done at zoos...nonetheless I live with these questions as do many of you.
