I've got to spoil this party of a cinq star credential and explain my experience in the cheapest bed per night on a Samedi thru Lundi booking. This is the other end of the price spectrum.
The location is great, especially in the summer. It's not too far from beri-uqam metro, I walked it in about 10-12 minutes. Really festive part of the city and close to the action on st catherine est. I'd say for the lady vagabonds to just be aware of your surroundings at night in particular, it can get a little sketch for some when evening breaks. Let's all just be aware of our surroundings in general, eh? It's good for you to stay on your game and not get victimized. It also helps to keep you from losing/misplacing your valuables when you're completely bent off sake bombs at Imadake.
I realize I'm rambling, but I'm speaking real shit into this little box in your computer screen and doing the butterfly dance from 1995 all over it. #BOGART. Poetry jam finger snaps if you feel me.
I arrived for check-in around 4pm on Saturday and was greeted by a cool dude, pleasant front desk experience. He saw that I booked a 2 night stay in a 20 bed co-ed dorm and gave me the low down on the accommodations along the way to the room. We walked thru the common room, down the stairs, back up a set of different stairs with piles of trash stacked along the side, passed a gated, partially sheltered common area where smoking is permitted, and into a totally separate wing from all the 'swanky' rooms and decor I saw online. After taxes it came out to be $52 CAD.
The room was bare and smelt of damp basement moss with brick walls throughout. The lighting and air flow was also shit. It was advertised as a 20 bed, but I counted 12 or 14 at most. Less people, less snoring. I didn't mind that. The space wasn't warm or inviting at all, literally just a place to hang your hat and sleep uncomfortably. On some halfway house shit, but worse.
There is one full bathroom in that section of the hostel, and you guessed it... it also reaked of suckieness. There was like a 5 tier shelf inside just full of random articles of clothing and hair brushes and used and abused deodorant sticks. I remember the glare from the light on the floor from the little puddles by the sink and bathtub. Pretty gross bro. Single-ply TP for that ass? No bueno mi amigo. The bathroom door is a wood-framed translucent glass from top to bottom, staring directly in front of the can. I wouldn't feel comfortable dropping a deuce knowing that the person on the other side waiting can see the color of my boxers.
I went to take a leak around 3am and saw an unflushed toilet full of yellow with the seat partially dislodged and loosened. I didn't bother fixing it b/c its gross and shit, that ain't my job. One drunk barely awake guy in his underwear and barefoot went in after me and as I approached the door to my room, I heard a huge sound of the dude sitting on the toilet seat and immediately slipping completely off of it, slammed into the wall by the tub and then on to the floor. Gravity always wins. THAT SHIT WAS HILARIOUS. sucks for him but he should have been aware of his surroundings. I told you so.
On my way back in from wandering the streets earlier that day, I stepped towards the entrance to see that there were about 10 people who were sprawled all around the door. I literally had to step over people to get thru. What the hell is this? The funny part is that the same guy who checked me in was one of the people on the stoop blocking the damn entrance. He truly gave no fucks.
I was so upset I cheaped out on myself by booking this price-point that I woke up around 630 the next morning to beat the rush to shower and avoid other peoples bathroom remnants, and by 730 I was fully packed and out the door with a booking at another hostel on Sherbrooke up the hill. I never even came back Monday morning to officially check out and turn in my key card.
I'm not a snob my fellow Yelp community, but I was like... 'dang I didn't fly from houston to boston then take an 8 hour greyhound to Montreal for this.' I'm not going out like that bro. There are too many choice hostels in this dope ass city to sell yourself short.
If you book here just be sure to pay for the higher price range rooms or be subject to something similar to what I experienced.
Bon nuit.
