| - Food trucks! Come one, come all, but you should come with an empty stomach for sure! It was my first G.A.F.F. ( Great American Foodie Fest ) and I was excited to see what food trucks were offering. To my understanding, there has been improvements from the first year to it's now current 5th year. Better crowd control, better ticketing process i.e. if you bought your ticket online or the V.I.P. package you go to a separate line instead of the same line of people who are just arriving-like me. More exposure has brought new food trucks to this event as well.
It was located at the Sunset Station Casino and Hotel parking lot and signs directed cars to the casino's covered parking garage. Free to park, $10 to get in per person at the gate, $8 online, and cash only. I figured at most carnival/festivals cash rules, but I managed to not carry enough and had to use their conveniently located ATMs in the front of entry. Fee was $4.50. I asked the gate worker if the vendors took credit cards/debit, but she said some do, but most didn't.
You get a wrist band upon entry and a cool big blue Foodie stamp on your hand. Girl putting my wrist band said the band is good for the whole time the event was going on, so if I came back the next day I would be granted reentry. Also stated if I lost the band, I could get another one. I'm guessing the super inked stamp would be proof you purchased entry to begin with.
Weather was a little warm as the Saturday event started at 12 p.m. , but luckily not to hot. It was crowded with a mix lot of families, couples, and groups of friends mobbing around for some foods to try out. The first truck I spotted and wanted to try out was the Strip Chezze. All things cheese and fried. Yes please! I got the 3 Cheese Parlay, which was an oozing hotness of cheddar and American cheese grilled cheese sandwich with a parmesan crusted sourdough bread served with a side of kim chi sauce. The mom chi sauce added a much needed brightness to such a dairy hot mess ( in a good way ). It added some spice and vinegar tang that made the cheese flavor pop. Also got the mac n cheese egg roll. It comes cut diagonally so there were 4 decent size pieces. Again, good on it's own, but much better with the kim chi sauce. Cold canned soda was $2 bucks each.
Later mosey on over to the funnel cake truck and wanted to try the ube flavored one, but compromised with the smores. Added the vanilla ice cream because they offered and I'm a sucker for extra sugar. The funnel cake was made to order so it was hot and slightly crispy. The ice cream got melty and each bite of hot cake and cool ice cream became a carnival of carby sugary goodness, which to me epitomizes these festivals. Wanted to try some gator bites, but line was disorganized and too long. Bummer. Next time.
All in all, I had a good time for my first go around. It was a little pricey, but keep in mind theses types of food are going to very caloric and filling. So I probably ate too much too fast. Otherwise, I think I would try out more food. I hope the growing popularity will bring on more food trucks to the Vegas food scene. I I look forward to next year's event!
