| - After starting its reputation poorly in my books with unearned praise for being "authentic" by a so-called expert, and a memorably poor run-in with some naughty fish n' chips (please read Kenny M.'s review for further details, I was there), the Darby Arms has upped the stakes with its wing night. This past summer, it was nearly a weekly tradition for our group to come together on a Wednesday night, often on their nice patio, for a cold beer and their 10 cent wings.
The reason it was almost a weekly tradition? The wings were worth it. We experimented with going to the King's Head for their own 10 cent offerings, and agreed that they tasted exactly like they were worth no more. At Darby Arms, these could be 25 cent wings: they are plump, and they definitely do not skimp on the sauces. They have the usual: hot, mild, teriyaki, honey garlic, along with more adventurous fare like curry and jerk. The jerk is a pleasant alternative to the standard Frank's Red Hot; it has a subtle heat that creeps up and fully takes over only after you have finished four wings. The heat will then multiply fourfold until you are coughing and tearing up like you're begging for mercy.
The rest of the fare is no better or worse than you can find in dozens of pubs around the city. They do have a varied menu, but its better to stick to the usual burger and nacho-type selections. Their beer selection is decent, and the service is just there, no ruder or more enthusiastic than other places. If you're in the area, it is a perfectly serviceable choice for pub grub and suds.
