| - I've been wanting to try Sweet Jesus ever since I started seeing pictures of their decadent creations on Instagram (c/o Home of the Brave). I was on my way to the AGO when I realized I'd be passing through the neighbourhood. I was in need of an afternoon pick-me-up, so the circumstances really couldn't have been more perfect.
When I arrived, there was a line up of maybe 15 people. It took about 20 - 30 minutes to reach the counter to place my order and maybe another 10 minutes to receive my cone. They gave us menus to peruse while we were in line, which facilitated the ordering process.
I ordered the Rocky Road Rage (burnt marshmallow and chocolate twist soft serve, dotted with mini marshmallows, drizzled with chocolate sauce, and coated in walnut-cashew crumble). First of all, the presentation was beautiful - they really do take the time to make sure that the toppings are evenly distributed and the cones look good. Now for the taste. Bottom line: It wasn't the best soft serve I've ever had, but I though it was still pretty good. The texture was a bit icy, but surprisingly, it held up relatively well in the afternoon heat (unlike ice milks.) The flavours were discernible (i.e., the chocolate was chocolatey and the burnt marshmallow did have a toasty sweet essence.) The walnut-cashew crumble was FANTASTIC and probably the highlight for me.
Is it worth the wait? Well, I've waited longer for bedazzled ice cream cones that weren't as good as this one was... so I really didn't mind the wait.
Is it worth the price? This is a more difficult question... $6 is a lot to spend on ice cream. That being said, ice cream is one of my favourite foods and I thought it tasted good, looked pretty, and the store is staffed by friendly people, so I'll say, yes, it is worth it as a once in a while kind of treat.
