My wife works just a few doors down from Von and has brought home doughnuts from Vons a few times. I finally had a chance to check the place out a few weeks back in person. A bunch of Yelpers organized a get together a while back as well and I couldn't go. Smack down right in the middle of Greektown is a special doughnut shop that makes them, sells them and then eventually runs out. Yes, this place doesn't have to sell day olds or recycle their food for green bins because they sell out, all of them pretty much every single day so I've been told by my wife.
I ended up getting a half dozen which is just over 19 bucks at around 1pm during the week. They're a bit expensive sure but that's only if you're comparing it say Tim Horton's. Don't do that... you can't compare what they make to what Von offers because it's apples to oranges. If you want a quality prepared on premises (not frozen mass produced product) doughnut then Von's is your place. They remind me of a lot of places in the US that take the extra trouble to make doughnuts fresh and good with a bit of a wild side to them.
They have that classic "Simpson's" and let me tell you it looks just like on TV but it's not a cartoon. They are also a healthy size as well. These doughnuts are large and some of the toppings aren't what you'd find just anywhere. While they had a choice of about 8 or so at the time of our visit, they change the offerings and don't always have the same flavors all the time. One of my all-time favorites is definitely the maple dipped bacon. There's just something so Canadian about having maple AND bacon on top of a fried dough marvel.
Some people like macaroons or cupcakes or cookies. Doughnuts are my thing and that'll never change.
