| - I feel a little funny giving Spoon another 5 star review, but they've earned it once again. On a snowy December Saturday night, we decided to celebrate our recent engagement by heading to Spoon. I called ahead to see if they had tables, but there was nothing until 9pm (protip: they're on OpenTable). However, given the weather, the hostess thought there might be cancellations and suggested we check out the lounge for dinner or to wait out a table. We headed over, and had another fantastic dining experience, though the menu had changed dramatically from my last visit.
The bartender was our server and did a great job (also asked us if we were celebrating anything, and promptly brought us free champagne), and was able to figure out from my vague recollection ("it was citrusy and French!") what the vermouth drink I had so enjoyed previously had been (Dolin blanc with a twist of orange peel).
While tables did not become available, we ended up sitting on the couches in front of the fireplace which is one of the more romantic settings I've seen...great for a date night!
Things of note:
The mushroom soup was the perfect starter on a cold evening--it was thick and comforting without being overly heavy.
The crispy duck confit with Indian spices was amazing. The fiance and I were fighting over the last few bites of the 3 grain salad.
The baklava with poached pear and pear sorbet was absolutely delicious. I wasn't a fan of their "Spoon bar" dessert last time but I'm not a chocolate girl. This was light and refreshing, not overly sweet, and the bartender must have told the kitchen staff about our celebration as it came out with "Best Wishes" written on it.
And obviously there's the amazingness that is the bread, but other reviews have talked about how wonderful it is already, so I'll skip the details. Bottom line, Spoon does amazing, creative food with a menu that changes frequently, and the bar/lounge menu gives lots of options for those looking for more of a tapas-style meal, with most plates between $8-$12. Others have commented on spotty service, but this bartender certainly earned her 30% tip.
