| - I went to the Thrifty Web Site to check prices. I had booked a car previously through Costco for a two week vacation during the Christmas/New Years holiday and the only rate I could get was around $750.00 for the two weeks. I was hoping to find something cheaper as it got nearer to the holiday.
Somehow, the Thrifty booking site took me to the Car Crawler portal (I really was not aware it had until I was finished with the reservation). At any rate, I found a two week rental for a mid sized car for a total of $368. Needless to say I was pleased and completed the booking. When the web site charged my credit card for $208.00 as a deposit I was a bit surprised as usually Thrifty reservations are not prepaid. That is when I discovered that the reservation had been made through Car Crawler.
I was a bit concerned about the reservation so I called Thrifty to confirm the number I had been given and was told it was a valid Thrifty reservation booking.
I was still a bit skeptical that I could get a car for two weeks at this price, so to be certain I would have a car, I made a backup reservation at Budget. The quoted price for that reservation was $575 for the two weeks.
The good news is that when I got to Thrifty at PHX, the reservation was honored with no hassles, I paid the remaining balance of $160 and away I went.
I am still not sure how I got to Car Crawler from the Thrifty web site, but in the future, I will sure check Car Crawler when shopping for rental cars.
As for the car it was OK. Thrifty PHX allows you to choose you car. The choices were Hyundais or Nissan Altimas. The Hyundai was closest so I choose that. The Altimas are probably better. The Hyundai had 40K miles and showed it. We drove a long way and it was not very comfortable. But, I could have taken a bit more time and probably have gotten a newer Nissan. My fault, not Thrifty's. Check in and out was very easy, no pressure to buy coverages and a very quick rental check in. The rental agents were pleasant and personable.
Interestingly, the Thrifty car had a Hertz Never Lost GPS installed and working. The Never Lost is a bit clunky to use by the standards of today's technology, but it was nice to have. I was not charged for having it. I think Hertz charges about $10.00/day for the unit.
As a final note, if you are a Blue Chip member be sue to put your number in at the beginning of the reservation. You cannot add it to your reservation once it is made through Car Crawler.
