  • This review isn't just about Gateway but perhaps is applicable to Uptown apartments in general. That is it's like buying an expensive new car. The first 3-6 months are great and you're really enjoying your new toy. Over time though the luster wears off and you realize you probably would have been off with some less expensive and more practical. I haven't had any major problems but a lot of little things which I allude to below. That coupled with living Uptown isn't all its cracked up to me has me thinking about renewing for a 3rd year. The 2 things I like the most about living here aren't really with the apartment itself but its location. I like that I can hop on 77 or a greenway in under 3 minutes. The flip side to the location is isn't right in the heart of Uptown and a walk to say the Epicenter takes 15 minutes. Of course there's Uber and other options but if you really be close to where the Uptown action is you need to move further east (you'll pay more). I could have gotten a place 5-10 minutes away from where I'm at for a few hundred less, still in a safe neighborhood and when I wanted to explore Uptown park or take transportation. From a cost standpoint this makes a lot more sense. Again I suspect this is not exclusive to Gateway but in regards to the staff. They're nice people and I'm sure you doing the best they can. But they skew on the young side. I can tell they were hired as salespeople, not property managers. They know how to do a good job presenting the place but they're not putting a lot of thought in how they make the place better for existing tenants. I doubt they ever walk around the complex like a good property manager taking note of things which need refurbishment or improvement. They only react if a tenant complains i.e. they're not proactive. A lot of them I'm sure look as this job just as a stepping stone in their career so I don't sense they take a lot in the place and look to go above and beyond. The best property manager I ever had was an older woman who had there for many years, could answer any question, knew a lot of the tenants whenever she encountered, etc. I suspect Gateway considers it a better investment to hire recent college grads on the cheap than pay an extra 10-20k and bring in a seasoned property manager. Some other considerations: -It's mandatory you get the cable/internet package. Works for me. But in this era of cord cutting and Google Fiber mandating that a tenant get services from one provider seems outdated. Similarly while it sounded nice at first the $25/month valet trash is something else I can do without. I still have to take stuff out to get recycled. I'd rather have the money -Pet friendly also means pet dirty. And while they're trying to crack down and I think most people try to be courteous, you'll see share of pet related filth around the complex. -Gym is enough for a decent workout. But an apartment I had in South Charlotte at 2/3 the price was better. When you advertise you are "luxury" you're saying you have the best or close to the best of everything. Not really at this place. -Noise isn't a huge issue but depending on where you are situated the sounds of the street late at night can be heard. -Parking, like most uptown apartments, is tight. You will always get a spot but most parking has spots of 3 and then a beam. If one car doesn't park right in the middle that leaves less room for the other cards. Contrast to my last apartment in South Charlotte. Since the complex had a lot more space, parking was a lot more comfortable.
