| - I remember getting a lift back home once with a friend who told me about this weird station he found that was playing all sorts of off-brand indie tunes and mashups. When I inquired further, he told me that a Saturday evening set was starting soon. I stared at the radio quizzically as someone introducing themselves as "Midnight City" launched into one of the strangest playlists I'd ever heard.
From that moment on, I was hooked.
Indie88 reminds me a lot of how 102.1 The Edge used to be way back in the day -- that weird, edgy, off-kilter station that doesn't really care about advertisers or popularity, so much as trying to define their identity by any means necessary. Sure, there's plenty of CanCon on normal rotation, but the specialty blocks are where the real jewels lie. There's just something special about a station that seamlessly mixes M83 remixes, P. Diddy/Black Keys mashups and alt-rock hits like it's nothing.
I tend to listen to the station often via their online portal, and they have a number of awesome segments and programming blocks. I'd say that a large part of the charm the station has is due to Dave "Bookie" Bookman, who joined the station after The Edge reportedly fired him back in 2012 (Google search is my friend). He hosts a number of different programs, including a rock history show on Sunday nights and the aforementioned vinyl-oriented program, and his enthusiasm for all things music is palpable.
Although I still feel it's a bit too early to make a judgement call on the station (it's still a new kid on the block, comparatively speaking), and although I still have a couple problems with the station -- namely, some of the hosts wear their political/social opinions on their sleeve and force it into conversations way too much -- Indie88 is a fascinating, spirited station that seems to have planted a foothold on the landscape and is making their mark.
Well worth a listen.
