  • I went in for a mole check. First impressions were very poor. The front desk staff was unsmiling and frankly rude. It was clear this was not a happy bunch of employees. I watched them for 20 minutes. Taken to my exam room by a woman who didn't say a word to me. When we get to the exam room in an unfriendly tone she asks medical questions and leaves. Dr. Geary arrives. Examined my whole body in less than a minute. Grabs a scalpel and tells me she want to biopsy a mole (that was not one I was concerned about. It had never changed size or shape). Rather than take a small piece, which is what other dermatologists have done, she slices off the whole mole and a lot of skin around it. She didn't even stop walking, she just sliced as she walked by. She didn't spend five minutes with me and directed no questions to me, but rather to her unfriendly assistant. I followed all the instructions to not leave a scar, but I have been left been left with a scar. The only thing Dr. Geary addressed to me was she wanted to make sure i knew that she was the top doctor in the valley in finding problem moles. This could happen because she takes a lot of moles off that don't really need a closer look. Of course the more moles you slice and dice you have a much higher chance of finding a problem mole. So if you don't mind rude people and a doctor who could care less about you, by all means make an appointment. And you can leave with scars too. I will say she smiled the whole time. I considered it very fake. She was very well dressed and didn't care about showing off her wealth to her patients. Unfortunately, I have a lot of experience seeing doctors. But it does give me a very good idea of what makes a good doctor. i could care less whether the doctor's personality is one I care for, I just want a good doctor ( though of course I would prefer a friendly doctor). A less than one minute exam does not make a good doctor. A staff that appears unhappy does not make an efficient office that makes it easy for patients to get meds or even appointments because a lot of mistakes will be made. Rule number one for me when visiting a new doctor is to watch the staff. If they appear that they like each other and like helping patients, that's a doctor who cares about your experience. In and of itself it doesn't mean the doctor is good, but I have found a high correlation.
