| - I went to dinner with 2 co-workers last night, a Monday night. We walked in and found out it was our lucky night. Without a reservation we weren't able to get a table, but there were 3 seats in a row immediately available at the sushi bar. This place is small, so definitely plan ahead and make reservations.
The service was friendly and prompt. We started with edamame, seaweed salad and a house salad. Our group of 3 ordered a variety of sushi rolls, nigiri and sashimi.
I tend to stick with rolls primarily, but couldn't resist the tuna (maguro) nigiri my boss ordered. The fish is so fresh here, I had to try a piece. He also had the Negi Toro roll (fatty tuna/tuna belly with scallions) which I tried. It wasn't my personal favorite, but I'm glad I tried it here at Hiro to try the best.
I chose 2 rolls for myself. First, a shrimp tempura roll. Pretty reliable and not very creative, but I always get it. This one was a little bland (probably made worse by my no-cucumber request) but they happliy provided a little side of eel sauce when I requested it.
My second roll was the Spicy Ribbon Roll. I LOVED it. I will go back for this roll. The spicy tuna had a great flavor and was a perfect match for the cool, creamy avocado striped on top.
This was by far the highest quality sushi I have had in Phoenix/Scottsdale, and probably anywhere else in the country. The price was fair and as I expected. Rolls range from $6.95 to $13.95. No real specials like happy hour, but I was coming here for an exceptional dinner, not a discounted price and/or experience.
