| - Hello Yelp, it's been awhile! I didn't really have anything to add as I tend to go to the same places in my little part of the world. Once you find the good stuff why deviate? Don't get me wrong, I like to venture out once in a while and try new things when they come along. For instance Alamo Drafthouse. Being a cinephile I have known about Alamo Drafthouse since it's inception in Austin, TX in 1997. I dreamed about going to Austin to experience this glorious venue that does not allow talking or texting during the film. Then I found they were expanding. They expanded to San Francisco AFTER I moved away from the Bay Area. I was crushed. Then one day I found the news that Alamo would be coming to Chandler! I was beyond excited! Alamo? Right here in my own city? YES!!! My first outing there was to see Rogue One in December 2016. The staff were friendly and the service was good. I no longer had to juggle popcorn and a drink while climbing stairs to get to my seat. When you get older that's a feat unto itself. The theater was so quiet and we enjoyed the film. I thought the servers might be a little distracting but I barely noticed them. Due to my work schedule at the time we sadly did not go back until March. Now Alamo is like my home away from home. I'm there at least once a week to enjoy a film or go to a movie party. If you love film this is the place for you!! Alamo shows first run films of course but the movie parties and special screenings are just what I had been hoping for all these years. Movie parties are done with films that are highly quotable and you are allowed to quote while watching, of course I suggest you don't quote the entire film because, well, that's kind of annoying. Some movie goers dress as their favorite characters for the movie parties too. I've been to Raising Arizona, The Princess Bride, The Big Lebowski, just to name a few. And guests.....oh the guests! A screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory brought the actors that played Veruca Salt and Mike TeeVee. They did a Q&A after the film and a meet and greet. Recently my daughter and I saw Hook and Dante Basco, aka Rufio, from the film was there for Q&A and meet and greet. I stalk the Alamo calendar to see what is coming next. And Film Club......we meet twice a month and see off beat films. Some are foreign, some are horror, some documentaries, some older films but always good fun and interesting. Sure I've read the other reviews, the ones that are not so glowing. Here is my take on that.....READ the policies before you go. It's all there on the website. No, you can't take your infant to a screening........ever! No, you cannot arrive LATE. This is not Harkins! If you arrive after the trailers you will not be let in. And DO NOT TALK OR TEXT!! These are the policies written for everyone to see on the website. Now, on to the food and drink. There is a reason it's called Alamo DRAFTHOUSE. They serve 30 different, LOCAL craft beers ON TAP!! And you can have any one of them delivered to your seat while you watch a movie! DELIVERED TO YOUR SEAT! They have a full bar too so if beer is not your drink of choice you can have a cocktail or a glass of wine. I think the food is well above what you can get at any other movie theater. Harkins has good popcorn but Alamo has REAL butter! Not the yellowy orange butter substance used by other theaters. And it's bottomless at Alamo! Eat your weight in popcorn if you like! They also have pizzas, burgers, salads, lots of other snacks and delicious milkshakes. Espresso Chocolate is my favorite. All reasonably priced. If you were going out to eat and then going to a movie you would likely spend the same amount as if you were to just have dinner while you watch a movie at the Alamo. Unless you go to Taco Bell and eat off the dollar menu, then yes, that is cheaper but not nearly as good as a Hatch Green Chili burger and fries at Alamo. And don't forget to sign up for the Victory program. You get perks for seeing movies. Free popcorn, a milkshake, a snack. If you become Top Brass like some of us there is a party at the end of the year and a screening of a film just for Top Brass. It makes you feel pretty special. The owners and the staff at Alamo Drafthouse Chandler are always there to listen if you have an issue or a suggestion. Of course if you approach them screaming or mad because you were kicked out for talking that's not going to get you too far. Just remember, kill em with kindness, it goes a long way.
I love Alamo Drafthouse! I've made some great friends there just from meeting other people who love film as much as I do. Come and hang out at the bar and talk film. Come and have your own Alamo experience! There is another Alamo opening in May in Tempe. They will have 35mm capability. Rumor has it there going to open one in Gilbert too. So give it a try. Tell the staff I sent you. Who knows, you might even see me there!
