  • This place a neighbourhood gem. It was my sister's birthday today, but we were tired and just looking for something lowkey and in our area. She was in the mood for sushi and we ended up at Sushi Wa. There is one server to the place and it's quite cozy. She gave us plenty of time to look at the menu and tried checking up on us until we took too long (oops). We did eventually order and food started coming out pretty quickly, but well-paced afterwards. She first brought over a radish roll of some kind, with mango and avocado. I was bewildered, and asked if we had ordered this. She said it was on the house! It was delicious and wonderfully crafted. She then brought out another roll which I can't quite remember what was inside. But it was also delicious and complimentary! Lastly, we got some noodles and soup which was flavourful and refreshing. What a great start! We then got our food. My dad got the kalbi dinner which was tender and plentiful. My mom got a salmon teriyaki bento. And my sister and I overindulged in a small sushi sashimi roll party platter. The party platter was a sushi boat, basically, and had cute added touches of carrots carved into the word "HAPPY" and a radish with carvings on it as well. The sashimi was fresh and sizeable. The sushi could have used a bit more wasabi to stick them on. But they were also individually garnished with green onions and other accoutrements depending on the kind of fish. Beautiful presentation. The rolls were good, but nothing too spectacular. The truly great part of this place is the service. Joseph, one of the sushi chefs (and I presume the owner), came to our table towards the end of our meal to ask how it was going. He introduced himself and asked us how everything was. We said it was delicious and my mom mentioned it was my sister's birthday and we thanked him for the complimentary rolls. He thanked us, and walked away. About 10 minutes later, the lights were dimmed, a cheesy Happy Birthday track played on the speakers and he brought out a little sushi pizza with a candle on it. It was so nice! He then offered to take our picture and printed it out for us right there. Joseph also remembered our names by the end of the night and personally walked us out and opened the door for us. He seems like a nice owner and made lovely food. We'll definitely be coming back for the service and the good food too.
