  • I enjoy the city of Pittsburgh. And I enjoy trying new things. So suffice it to say, I was happy to combine those two things this when my wife and I and two friends were hanging out in Market Square and PPG Place the Saturday of Light-Up Weekend. One of them suggested Nola, as she had eaten there once before. Since we hadn't, we went along. I've been to New Orleans, and the first thing I noticed walking in: the place smelled a lot like that city. That was a good thing. Also a good thing: our timing. We were told that normally on a Saturday night, there would be a lengthy wait for a table, but since we had beaten the dinner rush, we only waited about ten minutes. Once we were seated, a lovely lady named Mariah was our server. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and even when she wasn't sure about what that day's specials were, she let us know that she'd get us that information: which she did - and I was glad, as I wound up ordering the fried chicken, which was different from any I had ever had before and very good. It had a sweetness to it and a bit of a kick - much like the aioli that came with crispy fried alligator, which, along with the frog legs we ordered and the fried green tomatoes made for great appetizers (and I don't even like tomatoes). I didn't try the flatbread, but it got rave reviews from my friends and my wife, who did. At the end of the evening, a manager came up and asked us how we liked the fried chicken, as they were experimenting with it and wanted a customer's opinion. At that point, I hadn't tried it, but my wife had and she assured him that it was very good (something I'd find out later). For drinks, we kept it pretty simple, though my wife did enjoy the Canyon Oaks Cabernet. We didn't wind up getting dessert, because we were very full. Too bad, because I imagine that they make a great beignet. All in all, it was a very good dining experience. Can't wait to come back.
