| - My husband and I were here on opening day six years ago, queued up and excited to be attending our first supermarket grand opening. (Don't judge.) Everyone in line got a coupon book full of offers for completely free items. Eggs! English muffins! Mustard!
And when the last Harry Potter book came out, did Mike and I don our wizard hats* and party at the bookstore? No! We stood around with a dozen others at Smith's when midnight came, and got some vittles along with our Deathly Hallows. (Not that I could eat after what happened to Hedwig. Hedwig! NEVER FORGET.)
So, I will always have a soft spot for Smith's, especially since I remember when there weren't many grocery options in this part of town. (When I first moved here, I drove up and down likely streets looking for a supermarket, finally just giving up and going to Summerlin where I knew they had a Whole Foods. I didn't even know the names of other stores in this part of the country to know what to look up. Oh, life before Yelp, it was so bleak and hungry...)
These days our options are Smith's, Albertson's, Vonn's, Glazier's, Sunflower Market, Fresh and Easy, and I'd even count Whole Foods at Town Square if the traffic is right. I'd rank Smith's just about in the middle of these.
Pros: all of the expected fare, plus a wide variety of discounted cheese (I like trying new things), good-size vegetarian/natural foods areas (although note that more mainstream veg products - like Boca and Morningstar Farms - are going to be in the regular freezer section), and La Brea-style breads (although go to Albertson's for wide French bread and Glazier's for baguettes).
Cons: I haven't been to Smith's at night for awhile, but you used to have to shop in the dark if you wanted produce after 10 p.m. We were told it was to save energy, with the implication that they could just close off that section, but we were being given fumbling privileges. The freezer section, with its motion-detection lights that never detected motion, wasn't much better. As people who like to shop after sundown during the hot summers, this is probably why we stopped going to Smith's, but hopefully that policy has since changed.
All in all, it's about what you'd want in a regular grocery store. No manky clientele. Clean atmosphere. I prefer Glazier's for its special products and the way they give 10% of the profits to animal charities, but if I want to go somewhere a little closer, or I want to see what's new in cheese, Smith's is a sure thing.
* My husband would like for it to be known that we don't actually own wizard hats. HA! I'd say more, but his birthday's coming up, know what I'm saying?
