| - As a former professional baker and cake decorator this place just wasn't for me. The owner is very sweet and place is decorated well, but it's the cakes I take issue with.
First of all, the idea of a baby cake is great but not when four sides and part of the top are left exposed to the air. Yes, they are in paper but they are not baked in the paper they are placed in, which leaves all sides open to the air. This can dry the cake out. Icing not only serves as a flavor enhancer, but it also protects the cake from drying out. That said, surprisingly my baby cake wasn't overly dried out...yet.
The flavor was fine. Nothing grand. I had the white almond and was expecting a nice almond flavor, but it felt a little flat. The icing seemed to be vanilla. My daughter had the strawberry and loved it.
On the whole I did not care for the icing. It's a traditional American buttercream made with powdered sugar. I'm more of a fan of French, Italian or Swiss buttercream (Swiss being my favorite). The reason I don't care for American buttercream is the texture. It's gritty. The icing overpowered the cake in my opinion. If it had a different buttercream I would have like it much more.
The cakes are not refrigerated. No big deal, but as someone who has worked in many kitchens I'm left wondering how this fits in with health code.
I've been to the store twice and I will probably stop in again because my daughter likes it. Also, I think it's important to support small business. I wish Iced for Life nothing but the best, but I'll probably try out some other shops before swearing my allegiance.
