  • A friend was celebrating a birthday the other day so twenty of us showed up to help celebrate. Their restaurant of choice was BD's, so, after making a reservation, we all gathered in the upper section of the place. This all happened on a Tuesday night so we didn't find it overly crowded. The main idea of BD's is: you are given a bowl and anything you can get into the bowl will be what is grilled for your meal. You gather your "mix" at a kind of salad bar, except it contains meats, veggies, sauces and spices. Stack as much of it as you want in your bowl and that's the makings of your meal. Proceed on over to the grill, take a place at a numbered spot (so they can tell whose meal is whose) and it will take about five minutes to cook. If you are vegan or vegetarian, tell them and they will put up a little barricade to keep anything from the adjoining cook-spot from drifting over into your food. Hint: everyone gets a bowl of white or brown rice, lettuce wraps or tortillas, so skip the noodle stuff and concentrate on the "good" stuff. It was my first time at BD's, it not being anywhere near where I live or hang out, so I had to kind of learn as I went and it was a bit confusing. One of the first things at the "bar" were eggs. I thought they were hard boiled, so skipped them. They are not. Grab one or two and the cooks will scramble them right into your meal. Fill your sauce cup up if you actually want to taste the sauce. And go easy on the spices. The One Bowl of Stir-Fry goes for $9.99. Add $1.50 for Unlimited Soup and Salad Bar. Add another $1.50 for Unlimited Stir-Fry. The evening I was there, one of the soups was a creamy roasted root vegetable with tomato chunks. It was some of the best soup I have ever eaten! Honestly, I went back for three helpings. Stirred in a little rice and it became a meal in itself. Overall no one complained, and there was much praise for BD's Mongolian Grill. The staff was as helpful as it gets, answering any questions and even going to grab an egg for one of our group who, like me, thought they were hard boiled and neglected to select one. Parking is probably a little iffy in the Coventry area, especially on busy weekends, but I found a spot on the street just around the corner across from the theater. Even though it is part of a small chain that extends mostly through the Midwest, I understand why BD's is a local favorite.
