  • Upon arriving in Pittsburgh, I was disappointed with the dearth of healthy, fast-casual options, especially compared to the cities I am used to living in. So I was thrilled when I found Kahuna Poke and thought that it could be my go to place for my time in Pittsburgh. It was reasonably priced ($10 for a filling regular sized bowl), the salmon was yummy, and the different vegetable options were all very nice (I especially enjoyed the marinated kale); however, my second visit here was incredibly disappointing and now I do not envision myself returning. The man making a bowl was very obviously working his first shift there as he did not know where anything was and seemed perplexed when I asked for some basic menu items, such as ginger, to be added to my bowl. While this was a tad annoying, it was by no means a reason to not return. When it came time to add a sauce to my bowl though, this man added 10 servings worth of Ponzu sauce to my bowl. Consequently, the only thing my bowl tasted like was sodium. The flavors of the pineapple, edamame, and salmon were all lost and with it the deliciousness of my bowl. I understand that new employees are going to be a part of any business, but Kahuna Poke should have trained this guy more thoroughly or had a more experienced employee looking over his shoulder to ensure that he was properly making the bowls. This was also frustrating because in addition to the bowl not tasting good it also did not taste healthy because it was so loaded with salt. My other gripe with Kahuna Poke is that they do not seem to care about sustainability. More specifically, even if you are eating your bowl in the restaurant they still give you a plastic to-go bowl. This is wasteful and environmentally unfriendly. A sustainable alternative would be for them to copy Sweetgreen and provide customers who are eating at the restaurant with a ceramic-type bowl that can be washed and reused.
