  • SETTING: It's like eating inside a fish market! Cool decorations that followed a sea life theme. Random tables dispersed in sectioned areas. FOOD: So I hear this place has the freshest fish in Pittsburgh? I'm not going to argue with that statement. I saw fish being carted around, iced, and cut. It all happens in house on the one side where you can buy fish by the pound. We went with the Green Dragon Roll and Fish Tacos. The Green Dragon Roll consisted of shrimp tempura, eel and crab, and avocado. It wasn't anything special compared to sushi joints I've been to elsewhere (outside of Pittsburgh), but I would say that it's one of the better quality rolls here. Solid roll, no complaints. Fish Tacos was the main reason I wanted to come here. I'm used to beer-battered fish tacos, so I was excited to try the non-battered version. The Fish tacos consisted of a mix of swordfish, salmon, and tuna in a hard or soft taco shell (your choice) topped with cabbage, cilantro salsa, sriracha. The fish were well seasoned and soft. And they did not skimp on the fish either! Mixed well with the other ingredients, the tacos were packed with flavor. Size was appropriate too. What's not to like! SERVICE: Little to none. You order up front at the register and then find a seat. I was confused because I did not get a receipt (you don't pay until after you finish eating) or a number or anything! I didn't know how the staff would know who ordered what and where we were sitting. I was more than a little confused and felt there was a holdup because of this system. It all worked out though. The girl who took our order brought out our food. Then after we cleaned our plates, we went up to pay for it. Of course, we had to tell them what we ordered because there was no previous documentation. I don't know why the transactions are done this way...doesn't seem the most efficient, but hey, they've been doing this for a while and if it works for them, then it works. IMPRESSIONS: Like a previous yelper pointed out, this place is a bit confusing for the first time visitor. The layout, the ordering, the paying. It's not a big deal now I know how they roll, maybe I just sea things a little differently. But now that I have experienced the delicious seafood, I'm as happy as a clam :). I would definitely come back though. I am very very wary about eating sushi/raw fish at restaurants in Pittsburgh because I don't know how fresh they are. I mean, I know restaurants that serve fish aren't getting theirs from the Allegheny River, so it must be supplied by a place further out. This is why I always thought the fish in Pittsburgh might not be the most fresh. But at Penn Ave Fish Co? I trust them. Next time, I'll take a little risk and go raw. I want to try the sashimi!
