I completely understand difficult customers! I actually think it's great you took the employees side. I've worked the service industry and that's very rare for the owner to take the employees side when a customer is nasty, abusive, and rude. I appreciate the time you took out to explain things, and now you see how it looked as an outside perspective.
I've worked in the service industry and I have bawled my eyes out multiple times at jobs after being completely disrespected, yelled at, cussed at by customers and I've never had a boss/owner take my side, regardless of how nasty the customer treated me. I think there was a misunderstanding and my opinion of your character has completely changed. Thank you for being one of the few owners who treats employees like equal human beings.
