  • This is one of my favorite rides at Kennywood, and it seems that everyone else agrees with me because the line for it is pretty much always long. I will admittedly pass up the Exterminator during some trips due to said long line, but that's certainly no one's fault. This ride is basically an indoor roller coaster with a twist, as the little train car that you ride in will spin in a circular fashion during parts of the trip. Once you've left the main station and climbed the long hill into the main part of the ride The Exterminator dips and dives, makes sharp turns, and (as mentioned) spins; it's exciting and thrilling to be on. Depending on the time of year that you ride, the interior of the place may either be partially lit or not lit at all. During normal operations there are some dim lights (not very many - it's mostly a dark ride) to highlight the "Exterminator" theme, calling your attention to large fake rats and figures in extermination suits. During Fright Night operations, however, all the lights are turned off, so that you can't even see what's coming up next in the pitch black. Keep this in mind if you're a first time rider, as I know going in blind and in the complete dark is not everyone's cup of tea. (Although I've seen my friends do this with hilarious results!) I've admittedly had to dock a star from my overall rating of the ride because good lord, the handling of bags and items here is SO inconsistent. It used to be that if you had a bag, no matter how small, you were turned away unless you stashed it in a locker - but I haven't seen the lockers by this ride open in years. I came to Kennywood recently and at first I was allowed to ride with my small purse, and then later the same day I had the same purse taken by a worker who said it had to be stowed in a bin. They really need to pick a system, train everyone in that system, and stick to it, because the lack of a singular policy means I never know if I'll even be allowed on this ride. Overall, though, this is one of my favorite things to do at Kennywood, and I was thrilled when almost no one came to the park during my last visit. Three Exterminator rides in one day - a new record!
