  • When summer rolls around it means it's time to start trying out Montreal's many ice cream shops. Pandan is a brand new addition to the ice cream scene and is giving Montrealers a taste of Thai-rolled ice cream. This particular ice cream is made by pouring some kind of custard and flavourings on an ice-cold metal plate. From there the workers manipulate the ingredients as they start to freeze eventually forming a sheet which is then rolled up and served to the customer. The menu is pretty limited offering up a handful of choices. The business is very new so I could see them possibly expanding on that once they get a better feel for things. They do have some very interesting options like the Pandan sundae. Pandan is a tropical plant and it gave the ice cream a nutty flavour which I quite enjoyed. There is only one size of ice cream available and it costs $6.50. Take note that you can only pay with cards for orders over $10. It might seem steep but since each ice cream is made individually it really isn't all that bad. Also in a place like Montreal ice cream is a seasonal business so business owners have to do their best to make as much profit as possible during their narrow window of opportunity. So up until now things have been pretty good right? Well while the concept is definitely 5 stars the execution is severely lacking at this point in time. The customer service is really poor and this is something that needs to be improved if they are going to make it. I waited an hour to get my ice cream and the line up wasn't that long. The service was just that slow. Now I get that each ice cream is made fresh to order but one hour is WAY too long of a wait. One good place to start would be to have more staff on hand for busy periods like weekends. I was here on a Saturday afternoon and there was only one worker serving customers, handling both the cash and preparing the orders. Meanwhile, there was someone sitting in the back working on a computer who didn't seem to be willing to jump in and help deal with the crowd. I so badly wanted to like this place but if there is one thing I dislike it is long waits for food. I think that if they could improve this aspect of the experience Pandan would easily go up to 4 stars in my books. They do have an excellent product which stands out from their competitors but the customer service needs work right now.
